PROVEN Trivia #3 The Setting
PROVEN is based in an old era, much like the Medieval Times or Renaissance. As I was trying to figure out an official time frame, I looked at such things like medical technology, clothing, and especially weapons. Ultimately, I call it 17th century, but the reason why?
1632.
The year they use in The Goonies when talking about the pirate adventure they go on. Yes. I am that much of a nerd.
Truthfully, I am incredibly flexible on the time frame of this story line. 15th, 16th, 17th century. It all works for me. A great reason as to why I love that this is a fictional world, so I don't have to be historically accurate and I have a lot more room to play with my imagination and allow the readers to play with theirs, too.
For this story, medicine obviously wouldn't be as advanced as it is today, but for the scenario, I wanted it to be plausible to survive some of the things that they undergo. But then again, one thing I love about fiction is that it is...well, not true. I can make these people fly and spit cherry cola out of their toes if I want, and I don't have to explain why or how! (don't worry...this story is not that way) ;)
I visualize rapiers as the main weapon during this time, pictured below, as opposed to a heavy 2-handed sword, a la 3 Musketeers. I saw the most recent movie in 2011 just as I was beginning to put a story line together for PROVEN, so yes, I admit, I looked at the screen and said, "This is what I imagine!" It has taken it's own original turn since then, and I'm glad. But I still admittedly think that they tie in slightly.
Guns have a small play in the book so far, and I know far less about them, but below is similar to what I imagine (found on Google search )
The other things I had to consider were the ship, The Silver Blade, which they sail on for a month, and then the settings for the countries they visit.
